Bio
Todd Clare is an Australian artist based on Bundjalung Country in northern New South Wales. His current practice centres on painting, materiality, and the quiet narratives held within everyday surfaces. Drawing from environments that have aged with grace—worn walls, cracked facades, and domestic materials that bear the marks of time—Clare’s work captures a sense of presence through absence.

Each piece is constructed through a process of layering and removal—more repaired than painted. Clare often works with household materials such as house paint, glue, sand, paper, and wood to build surfaces that feel lived-in and tactile. These works unfold slowly, echoing the gradual erosion and reconstruction seen in old buildings or city streets. Final layers of oil paint and wax serve as a kind of closure, while allowing the history of underlayers to remain visible.

At the core of Clare’s practice is a deep reverence for imperfection and endurance. Influenced by artists like Antoni Tàpies and Jean Dubuffet, he embraces raw surfaces, quiet abstraction, and the emotional weight of materials. In an age increasingly shaped by the virtual and the disposable, Clare’s work offers a tactile resistance—a belief that beauty can be found in what has been made, unmade, and made again.
